Edward VI

1547 – 1553UK Monarchs before 1600

Overview

Edward VI ascended the throne of England in 1547 at the age of nine, following the death of his father, Henry VIII. As the first English monarch to be raised as a Protestant, his brief reign was defined by significant religious and social transformation. Because of his youth, the governance of the realm was managed by a series of regencies, initially led by his uncle, Edward Seymour, the Duke of Somerset, and later by John Dudley, the Duke of Northumberland.

During this period, the English Reformation accelerated, moving the Church of England further away from Roman Catholic traditions. Key developments during his rule included:

  • The introduction of the first Book of Common Prayer in 1549.
  • The implementation of the Act of Uniformity, which mandated the use of English in church services.
  • The systematic removal of religious imagery and icons from parish churches.
  • The establishment of a more radical Protestant theological framework for the national church.

The young king's health began to decline in 1553, leading to a desperate attempt to alter the line of succession to prevent his Catholic half-sister, Mary Tudor, from inheriting the crown. Edward sought to bypass both Mary and his other half-sister, Elizabeth, in favour of his cousin, Lady Jane Grey. This manoeuvre was intended to preserve the Protestant settlement he had championed throughout his years on the throne.

Edward VI died in July 1553, likely from tuberculosis, at the age of fifteen. His passing triggered a major succession crisis that briefly saw Lady Jane Grey proclaimed queen before Mary I successfully asserted her claim. The instability surrounding his death underscored the deep-seated religious divisions within the Tudor state and set the stage for the turbulent years of religious conflict that would follow in the subsequent decades.
