Overview

Born in Dublin on 16 October 1854, Oscar Wilde became one of the most celebrated and controversial literary figures of the late Victorian era. A master of the English language, he was renowned for his sharp wit, flamboyant style, and his dedication to the aesthetic movement, which championed art for art's sake. His career spanned various forms, including poetry, journalism, and fiction, though he is perhaps best remembered for his brilliant social comedies and his singular novel.

Wilde achieved immense success in London during the 1890s, where his plays captivated audiences with their satirical observations of high society. His literary output remains a cornerstone of British literature, characterised by clever paradoxes and a keen critique of the moral hypocrisies prevalent in his time. Key works from this period include:

  • The Picture of Dorian Gray, his only novel
  • Lady Windermere's Fan
  • A Woman of No Importance
  • An Ideal Husband
  • The Importance of Being Earnest

Despite his professional triumphs, Wilde's life was marked by profound public controversy. His reputation and career were shattered following a series of high-profile trials that resulted in his imprisonment for gross indecency. This period of incarceration had a transformative effect on his writing, leading to more introspective and melancholic works, such as The Ballad of Reading Gaol, which reflected on the harsh realities of the penal system.

Following his release from prison, Wilde lived in exile in France under an assumed name. His health deteriorated rapidly during these final years, and he died in Paris on 30 November 1900. While his life ended in relative obscurity and hardship, his legacy has undergone a significant reassessment, cementing his status as an enduring cultural icon whose work continues to be studied and performed across the globe.
