Overview

John Keats was a seminal English Romantic poet whose brief but brilliant career left an indelible mark on the landscape of literature. Born on 31 October 1795, he produced a body of work defined by its rich, sensuous imagery and profound emotional depth. Despite facing harsh criticism from his contemporaries and battling poor health, Keats developed a unique poetic voice that sought to capture the complexities of human experience and the transient nature of beauty.

His creative output is perhaps best remembered for a series of masterful odes composed during the height of his powers. These works remain cornerstones of the Romantic movement and continue to be studied for their technical precision and philosophical insight. Key examples of his enduring legacy include:

  • Ode to a Nightingale
  • Ode on a Grecian Urn
  • Ode to Psyche
  • To Autumn
  • Ode on Melancholy

The poet's life was tragically cut short when he died of tuberculosis in Rome on 23 February 1821, at the age of twenty-five. During his final years, he produced some of the most celebrated verses in the English language, yet he remained largely unrecognised by the literary establishment of his day. It was only in the decades following his death that his reputation grew, eventually securing his position as a central figure in the Romantic canon.

Keats is widely revered for his ability to balance intense sensory detail with deep intellectual reflection. His exploration of themes such as mortality, the power of the imagination, and the relationship between art and life has influenced generations of writers. By the time of his passing, he had transformed the possibilities of the English sonnet and ode, ensuring that his contributions to poetic beauty would be celebrated long after his untimely end.
