Elizabethan Religious Settlement

1559Tudor Britain (1485–1603)

Overview

The Elizabethan Religious Settlement, which began around 1559, represented a pivotal moment in the history of Tudor Britain. Following the turbulent religious shifts of previous reigns, Queen Elizabeth I sought to establish a lasting peace by creating a national church that would unify her subjects under royal authority. This legislative programme was designed to move England towards a moderate form of Protestantism, effectively restoring the monarch as the Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

The settlement was primarily achieved through two key pieces of legislation: the Act of Supremacy and the Act of Uniformity. These acts were instrumental in formalising the religious landscape of the nation, mandating the use of a revised Book of Common Prayer and requiring attendance at church services. By balancing traditional liturgical elements with reformed theological principles, the government aimed to accommodate a wide range of beliefs while ensuring political stability and curbing the influence of foreign religious powers.

The core objectives of the settlement included:

  • Restoring the Royal Supremacy over the church.
  • Establishing a standardised framework for Protestant worship.
  • Promoting national unity through a single, state-sanctioned church.
  • Defining the legal status of the clergy and the monarch's role in ecclesiastical affairs.
  • Reducing religious conflict by adopting a pragmatic approach to doctrine.

Although the settlement was intended to provide a definitive resolution to the religious instability that had plagued the country, it remained a subject of ongoing debate and negotiation throughout the remainder of the century. By positioning the monarch at the head of the church, the settlement fundamentally altered the relationship between the state and religious practice, setting a precedent for the governance of the English church that would endure for generations to come.
