Overview

From approximately 1987, the widespread adoption of laparoscopic surgery fundamentally transformed surgical practice. Often referred to as keyhole surgery, this approach moved away from traditional open procedures by utilising small incisions, miniature cameras, and highly specialised instruments to perform operations within the abdomen and pelvis. This shift represented a significant technological and procedural evolution, necessitating that surgeons undergo extensive new training and healthcare facilities invest in sophisticated, purpose-built equipment to facilitate these minimally invasive techniques.

The transition towards laparoscopic methods offered substantial clinical advantages for patients. By minimising the size of the surgical access points, the technique significantly reduced the physical trauma associated with operations. This led to a range of improved patient outcomes, including:

  • Reduced post-operative pain levels
  • Shorter durations of hospitalisation
  • Faster recovery times compared to open surgery
